Former junior middleweight titleholder Jaime Munguia’s recent victory over Bruno Surace on May 4 is now under scrutiny after he tested positive for a prohibited substance in a post-fight urine test.
A member of Munguia’s camp informed “ESPN KnockOut” commentator Salvador Rodriguez on Thursday that they were notified by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) on Wednesday evening regarding the presence of exogenous testosterone metabolites in Sample A. They stated that an official response will be submitted, and a formal request to analyze Sample B is forthcoming.
Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) has ten days to initiate the process for testing Sample B to determine if the testosterone metabolites are of exogenous origin. If the B sample also comes back positive for the banned substance, his recent win could be ruled a no contest, and he might face a suspension ranging from six months up to one year.
In a public statement on social media, Munguia expressed surprise at the result, noting that he had undergone two drug tests during training camp, both of which yielded negative results. “That’s why this notification from VADA has been completely unexpected,” he said. Munguia also stated that he is open to undergoing any type of testing—past, present, or future—to prove that he has always competed clean.
As of now, Golden Boy Promotions, Munguia’s promoter, has not provided a response to ESPN’s inquiries regarding the situation.
Munguia’s May 4 victory was a strong rebound from a shocking sixth-round knockout loss to Surace last December. He avenged that defeat with a dominant decision win on the Riyadh Season card, which was headlined by Canelo Alvarez’s victory over William Scull.
